Sandy strengthening; Not a NC landfall threat

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Sandy remains a tropical storm this morning and is accelerating toward Jamaica, where it will make landfall tonight. The storm will likely become a hurricane very soon, and could remain so as it heads toward the Bahamas Friday.

The track will be extremely important to potential impacts for Southeastern North Carolina. Once the system gets north of the Bahamas, all indications are that it will start to curve slightly out to sea. All models are currently showing this trend, and history supports this trend as well. Even with this offshore path, the storm may be close enough that clouds, some rain, and even some gusty winds just below tropical storm force will at least be a possibility for Saturday and Sunday. Keep in mind this can change with only a few miles difference in storm track, so keep it here as we fine tune the forecast.

Either way, high surf, and dangerous rip currents will be found at the beaches beginning Friday and lasting until Monday.
