Wrightsville Beach takes Sandy threat in stride

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — just when you thought Hurricane Season was winding down, the tropics flare up. But are people along the Cape Fear coast really worried about Hurricane Sandy?

At Wrightsville Beach, most people are used to hurricane threats and know how to prepare. But Hurricane Sandy’s path is uncertain, and that makes some residents uneasy. One local says she is planning for the worst and hoping for the best.

“I grew up around here, so we know what to do,” Tabitha Rodleton said. “We kind of stay around, see what happens. We don’t run, you know? We just stay here and deal with it.”

Visitors are more cautious. Some are already making plans to stay protected from the strong gusts of wind and rain.

“I definitely have plans for mattresses,” Wrightsville Beach visitor Dolores Baker said. “If it came close to you know go into the bathroom, which would be the most inside walls that they recommend.”

For others the focus is on the possibility of exciting surfing conditions thanks to the approaching storm. Surf shops are preparing for an increase of out-of-town surfers and a busy weekend.

“For me, I’m already losing sleep at night, Sweetwater Surf Shop manager Jason Baysden said. “I’m checking the weather every night trying to see what the storm is going to do, what the wind’s going to be doing, trying to think where can I go surf, where can I get the best ride possible.”
