Carolina Beach prepares for flooding and erosion from Sandy

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Gov. Bev Perdue has declared a state of emergency for eastern North Carolina as Hurricane Sandy heads north. Meanwhile, the Cape Fear Coast is getting ready. Our area in particular is hoping to reduce a big problem from hurricanes past.

It’s a triple threat. With hurricane sandy headed up the coast, a full moon and high tides, that could mean major flooding in Carolina Beach. Town officials are focusing on targeting the flooding on the north end on canal drive and roads surrounding Carolina Beach Lake, which are both trouble areas.

For the past two days the town has been pumping water out of the lake and will continue until Sandy passes. Town Manager Tim Owens says they are also taking care of standard preparations.

“We are gassing generators, making sure generators work. We’re fueling vehicles,” Owens said.

Besides flooding, erosion is another concern.

“We have a beach renourishment project coming up so hopefully it won’t impact that,” Owens said.

Overall, residents don’t seem too worried about Sandy.

“I’ve lived here my whole life and have been through much worse, so this shouldn’t be that bad,” Mallory Albertton said.
