Hurricane Sandy as expected; rain ending; wind will remain

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Tropical Storm Warning has been lifted for Brunswick County, but remains in effect for New Hanover and Pender Counties. The center of Sandy continues to pass east of the WWAY viewing area, and will lift northward today. Rainfall is steadily ending from west to east across the area, and should completely finish by mid-morning, even though gusty winds will remain.

Here’s the forecast for coastal counties:

This Morning- Rain early on for New Hanover an Pender Counties; dry to the west. Sustained winds out of the N at 15-30 mph (with a few gusts over 45 mph). Note: High tide at 7am will cause high water and coastal flooding along the coast in flood prone areas.

This Afternoon- Becoming partly sunny, with sustained winds out of the north at 15-25 mph (with a few gusts over 40 mph)

Tonight – Partly cloudy, with winds out of the NNW at 15-25 mph (with a few gusts over 40 mph). High tide around 7pm will again cause high water in coastal flood areas.

Monday – Partly cloudy, but still breezy with winds at 15-25 mph.

Coastal Winds/Seas:

Seas will peak around 8-10 feet near the beaches early Sunday. Farther offshore, seas will peak around 9 to 14 feet. Beyond 20 nautical miles offshore, seas will peak around 27 feet.


Inland Counties:

Mostly cloudy skies through mid-day Sunday with a 20% chance of shower. Partly sunny by afternoon. Winds will be out of the NNW at 20-30 mph (with a few gusts over 40 mph).
