NEW THIS MORNING: Checkpoint lands people in jail
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — You’ll probably notice abandoned cars along Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway this morning. Tt’s the aftermath of a big Halloween checkpoint organized by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Several agencies assisted the Sheriff’s Office in their effort to keep dangerous drivers off the road. In all, they handed out 67 charges in the early morning hours. WWAY has learned there were 16 arrests, including 14 DWI charges and 2 drug offenses.
The Sheriff’s Office typically sets up checkpoints around town for big holidays and other events during which they suspect there will be a higher number of drunk drivers on the streets.
