Travelers hit the road for Thanksgiving

Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — Whether it’s by plane, train, or automobile, millions of Americans will be hitting the road this Thanksgiving making it the busiest travel weekend of the year.

“Just be prepared that it is going to take longer to your destination and you may have to deal with accidents and to just plan ahead” says Angela Daley, of AAA Carolinas.

According to AAA Carolinas gas prices have dropped $0.54 in the last month and at $3.31 per gallon are $0.04 cheaper than last Thanksgiving.

“We do expect that holiday travel will be up this year about one percent over last year and a big part of that is due to the drop we’ve seen in gas prices,” says Daley. “The Thanksgiving Holiday is a huge driving holiday and it’s because it’s a four day weekend.”

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has suspended all road construction projects during the holiday so there is some good news for drivers.

Locally the number of travelers choosing to fly home for the holidays is also on the rise with close to 9,000 people expected to pass through Wilmington International Airport during the week.

U.S. Airways has added flights to meet the demand and TSA checkpoints are opening earlier to make flying more convenient.

“We ask that all passengers get here an hour and a half before departure time to avoid missing flights because the airlines have cutoff periods and those cutoff periods are firm,” says Gary Broughton, ILM director of operations. “If you’re within 30 minutes of your flight after that you can’t check your bags or board the flight.”
