Is Black Friday becoming Black Thursday?
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Is Black Friday becoming Black Thursday? Shoppers have been out all Thanksgiving Day getting a jump-start on their holiday shopping.
It may be Thanksgiving, but shoppers at the Wilmington Kmart have already pushed back the turkey and picked up the circulars.
“If you’re open, they will come” was the retailers’ logic this year. And so far it looks like they’re right.
“I’ll definitely be back,” said shopper Jeanette Zeller. “We’re looking forward to shopping 8 o’clock, 9 o’clock, midnight, whenever the stores are open.”
“There’s not much to be done after you cook all night long,” said another shopper.
Managers tell us that the decision to open on Thanksgiving Day has been a huge success.
“The customers I encounter are always glad that we’re here,” said Kmart Asst. Store Manager Barbara Taylor.” “You know a lot of people like to do early shopping. They like to come in and beat that Black Friday crowd.”
And it’s not only the adults who get into the shopping spirit, we talked to several kids who said they like the extra day to browse for what they hope Santa will bring.
As for the employees who are working on Thanksgiving? Most shoppers we spoke with say they do feel for them.
“I would definitely not be happy if I were working on Thanksgiving, so I feel for them,” said shopper Jessica Watters.
But Taylor says shoppers have no reason to feel guilty.
“Down through the years we get used to this time of the year and we look forward to Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday,” said Taylor. “It’s wonderful.”
Many more stores are set to open this evening and all throughout the night.
