NC DA says probe at UNC-CH has months to go

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — A district attorney says criminal investigators will need until at least next year to pore over emails and financial documents in the academic scandal at North Carolina’s flagship public university.

Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall told The News & Observer of Raleigh the investigation is focused on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s the African-American studies department, where athletes were enrolled in no-show classes.

Woodall said one State Bureau of Investigation agent is assigned to the case full time. The DA says the investigation is looking for potential fraud, forgery, misuse of state property and putting false information on state documents.

The university’s two-year scandal has led to sidelined football players, NCAA penalties, the end of a big-name football coach and resignation of Chancellor Holden Thorp.
