Tracked Great White visits Southport, Bald Head Island
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Great White shark you can track online has made it north to the coast of Brunswick County.
Mary Lee’s satellite tracking device pinged at 9:10 a.m. at the mouth of the Cape Fear River near Southport. By 12:42 p.m., she was off the east side of Bald Head Island.
Mary Lee is a 16-foot, two-ton Great White shark. She was first satellite tagged by scientists in Cape Cod in September. In just three months, she has made it all the way down the eastern seaboard and is making her way back north.
An expert at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher says it’s not uncommon for Great Whites to be in our coastal waters. He said the presence of one may represent many more in the area.
