Santa Cop grants Christmas wishes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With Christmas spirit in the air and Wilmington Police officers by their sides, many children kicked off the new month with a shopping spree at the Walmart on Sigmon road, all thanks to money raised by Santa Cop.

Santa Cop is a program organized by the Wilmington Police Department. The program raises money for less fortunate children who would otherwise not have much of a Christmas. This is Santa Cop’s 21st year and it did not disappoint. Children started the day with plenty of treats including a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus themselves. After telling Santa their wishes, the kids and officers hit the shelves.

One girl in particular was really excited to spend her 100 dollars. Carmella King picked out clothes, ear-muffs, and a doll. But she was most excited about her new Furby. Furbies are the popular robotic toys that are making a comeback since the 90’s. The toys are expensive, costing between 50 and 60 dollars.

“That is just amazing to see how excited somebody can be for a little toy that they normally would not be able to have had it not been for somebody to provide this for them,” says Carey Hunter of the Wilmington Police Department.

Wilmington police officer Quin Washington says Santa Cop is more than a great opportunity for these children. She says it is a learning experience.

“They are definitely learning how to make conscious decisions. She (Carmella) made the decision between a robe and a pillow pet. She realized that while she really wanted the pillow, the robe might have been more important.”

The Santa Cop program is funded by the generous donations of local individuals, businesses, and organizations. The program is always accepting donations.
