White concedes NC Senate race after 2nd recount
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – State Sen. Stan White has conceded the 1st District election to Republican challenger Bill Cook after a limited hand-to-eye recount showed Cook’s lead was unchanged.
White led Cook by 388 votes on Election Night. A canvass on Nov. 16 showed Cook held an 80-vote lead, but additional canvassing dropped the lead to 32 votes.
White requested a machine recount of ballots, and that reduced Cook’s lead to 21 votes out of more than 87,000 votes cast. But limited hand-to-eye recounts from randomly drawn precincts in each of the eight counties showed no change in Cook’s edge.
White said Monday that he wishes Cook the best in a district he described as big and diverse. Cook said he was eager to get to work for his constituents.
