UNCW welcomes new graduates into world

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — December is not only a time to celebrate the holidays, but it is also a time to welcome a new generation of graduates into the world.

UNCW held commencement ceremonies this weekend for its Professional Schools and College of Arts and Sciences. Over 1,300 young adults left the Trask Coliseum with a degree in hand. These graduates are ready to take on the world, but is the economy ready for them?

William Hall, Professor of Economics at UNCW says the economy is better than it was six months ago. He says graduates have a good shot.

“Of course, they are going out into somewhat of an uncertain environment with respect to possible employment opportunities. But I do believe that this year compared to last May, there is less uncertainty.”

While many graduates are not sure what they want to do, a few have everything all figured out.

“I have an interview on Monday, a follow-up with Lockheed Martin as a specialist with that,”
says Kyle Neumann, graduating with a degree in economics. “If that goes well, I am probably going to take it.”

“I am going to go work at Duke in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit,” says Kristin Norton who is graduating from the nursing program at UNCW.

Uncertainty plagues the minds of many other graduates. Chancellor Gary L. Miller says they have nothing to worry about.

“They have everything they need. And we will continue to give them support and wish them well.”
