B.J. Wright pleads guilty, heads to prison for years

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — It looks like B.J. Wright will not be home for Christmas after all.

Two days after a Columbus County judge granted Wright a bond, the 25-year-old with ties to R.C. Soles pleaded guilty to several crimes today with a sentence of from 12.5 to more than 17 years in prison.

“He will spent at least a decade and a half in prison,” District Attorney Jon David told WWAY NewsChannel 3.

Wright pleaded guilty to two counts of felony possession of cocaine, three counts of flee/elude with a motor vehicle, two
counts of harassment of a juror, one count of obstruction of justice, one count of felony conspiracy, one count of driving while license revoked and one count of obtaining the status of habitual felon.

“We feel that justice was served today,” Assistant District Attorney Heath Nance said in a statement. “The law enforcement community invested a considerable amount of time and effort to prepare this case and bring Mr. Wright to justice. They provided our office the tools that we needed to be effective in the courtroom. The result of their work was a long prison sentence that will greatly benefit the citizens of Columbus County.”

Wright had been held without bond after jumping through a second-story window at the Columbus County Courthouse in August, but he was entitled to a bond hearing. At that hearing Tuesday, Judge Douglas Sasser set Wright’s bond at upwards of $4 million, according to a spokeswoman for the judge. The spokeswoman told WWAY that as he left court, Wright told a bailiff, “I’ll be home by Christmas.” Now it appears that will not happen.
