CFCC students on path to success

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — What’s better than graduating from college? Many students at Cape Fear Community College say it’s having a job when you’re finished.

At the age of 16, Ciera Alley was a high school drop out. Thursday night the life of the mother of two changed forever when she received both her GED and her college degree.

“It was really great to be able to do both of them at the same time and study at the same time and do everything at once and just kind of get it over with and now I can go out and get a job immediately so it’s a lot easier,” says Ciera Alley.

In a time of economic uncertainty graduates from the Cape Fear Community College nurses aide program are continuing a staggering trend with over 97% of graduates finding a job upon completing the coursework.

“The demand for nursing assistants is extremely high in nursing homes, doctors offices, and the hospital so they have an excellent employment rate,” says program coordinator Claudina McLiverty.

Both instructors and students say what sets the program apart is the rigorous hands-on clinical training that sets the program apart and prepares students for the real world.

“It’s great because not only do you get the teaching that you need but you get the hands on,” says Alley. “You get to work at a nursing home with actual patients so you don’t get thrown out into the field scared to death. You know what you’re getting into and it’s really great. You just get to go out there and get the job, make the money, and do what you need to do and it’s amazing.”

The C.N.A. program runs for 17 weeks with classes twice a week and costs under $475.
