NC Sen. Mansfield to run for Democratic chairman
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – An outgoing state senator now wants to become the next chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party.
Eric Mansfield of Fayetteville told party members of his entry into the race in an e-mail last week.
Chatham County party chairman and Pittsboro Mayor Randy Voller also is running. The party election to succeed Chairman David Parker is Feb. 2 in Durham.
Mansfield is a physician and former soldier who served one Senate term but ran unsuccessfully in May for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor.
State Democrats are at a low point after 2010 elections saw them lose control of the Legislature and 2012 elections saw them lose the race for governor. Mansfield said the party will win with a clear message and by mobilizing volunteers, raising money and mending relationships.
