NWS says microburst, not tornado, struck Kure Beach

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The National Weather Service says a microburst, not a tornado, struck Kure Beach in a storm that rolled through the day after Christmas.

NWS crews went on a storm survey of the area Thursday morning. They found two windows blown out in a convenience store at K Avenue and Fort Fisher Blvd. and two ice machines that were toppled. No other damage was found.

These findings lead them to believe a microburst (a strong burst of damaging winds found in severe thunderstorms) was the likely culprit of this damage. Even though funnel clouds were spotted by residents, the crews could not find any damage that would be resulted from a tornado.

This storm struck early Wednesday morning, and did have a Tornado Warning from the NWS when it moved through Kure Beach.
