Raleigh cathedral gets windows from Philadelphia

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A new cathedral in Raleigh is getting dozens of stained-glass windows from a closed Philadelphia church.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports Wednesday that ground hasn’t even been broken yet on the new Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. But the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh has already secured 42 stained-glass windows from Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Philadelphia.

The 85-year-old windows tell the story of Jesus’ life.

Ascension of Our Lord closed Oct. 1. Raleigh Bishop Michael Burbidge grew up in Philadelphia and became interested in the windows when he heard the church was closing.

The diocese paid $320,000 for the windows and is spending an additional $1 million to have them restored. Burbidge says officials hope to sell naming rights to cover those costs.
