History comes to life at Fort Fisher

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) – It was a booming good time at Ft. Fisher this weekend, as history buffs from across the state gathered to hear the sound of artillery fill the air. The annual re-enactment marks the anniversary of the battles that took place 148 years ago as union troops sieged the fort and quickly brought an end to the war.

Visitors were treated to infantry and artillery demonstrations, tours of the fort’s structure and history, and talks from experts about the rich history.

"Well how often do you get to see artillery fired live?" says Civil War interpreter Jim McKee. "Really get out here, smell it, hear it, feel it. It’s just not something that happens every day."

Fort Fisher was vitally important to the Confederate cause during the war, as it protected the port of the Wilmington – which was the last open port in the south. The battle that brought about the capture of the fort is highlighted in the recent film "Lincoln".
