One in custody after standoff, police check for possible second suspect

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man is in custody after a standoff with police that started this morning and continued until after 1 p.m. in Wilmington. Meanwhile police continue to look into whether there’s a second suspect involved.

Police say it started when officers tried to serve a warrant this morning, and the man started shooting and ran off. Eventually, police said they had cornered the man in a shed on Barclay Hills Place.

A neighbor across the street who was stuck in his house during the standoff told WWAY that police fired tear gas in the area. The witness later sent us a picture of EMS taking a man, believed to be the gunman, from the scene on the stretcher.

The witness tried to come up the street to talk to WWAY, but he said police told him to stay where he was. Investigators say they found a door kicked in on a nearby house. They are not sure if the suspect in custody may have done it, or if there is another person involved.

Rachel Freeman School of Engineering, Mosley Performance Learning Center, Snipes Elementary School and the Child Development Center have all been under lockdown since the incident started. Law enforcement says the lockdowns are a precautionary measure until the suspect is in custody and that all children are OK. All schools already had a deputy on duty, but the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is sending more deputies to the area at this time.

WWAY has a crew on the scene. We’ll have more information as soon as it becomes available.
