McIntyre opens new office, talks big issues

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-7th District) moved into a new district office today. Starting a new term in a newly-drawn district means McIntyre no longer represents downtown Wilmington, where he’d had an office.

His new office is in the Waterford Shopping Center off US 17 in Leland. McIntyre, a Democrat who won election to his ninth term in the US House last year, says consolidating what had been offices in Wilmington and Bolivia will help him better serve his constituents in both Brunswick and New Hanover counties.

Later in the day, Rep. McIntyre stopped by our studio to talk about many issues facing Congress and southeastern North Carolina. He also talked about what he learned from his tough election fight last fall. (Play video to see the whole interview)

“It makes you realize that when you’re working on issues that affect the people back home, and they recognize that, in the end it’s not about party labels. Political parties in our country weren’t even invented back when the Constitution was written,” McIntyre said. “It’s a question of how well are you doing your job representing, and I’m grateful for that. We do not take any voter, any citizen, any issue for granted.”

McIntyre discussed many other topics, including the fiscal cliff, the recent House vote to suspend the debt limit, proposed gun control, beach renourishment and the VA super clinic under construction at Wilmington International Airport.

The congressman also has plans to open district offices in Elizabethtown and Johnston County.
