STORMTRACK 3: High winds & strong storms possible today
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A strong cold front pushing into North Carolina tonight will bring about rapid changes in our weather. High winds and severe thunderstorms are a concern; particularly this evening and into the overnight period.
For us in Southeastern North Carolina, the day will get off to a quiet start with sunny skies and balmy temperatures. Sunshine will last through the afternoon, but winds will begin to pick up quickly. Sustained winds of 20-25 mph with gusts close to 40 mph are possible before sunset.
By the evening, the front will begin to march across the state – moving into our area just before midnight. At this time it could carry strong to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds up to 60 mph possible. Even outside of any thunderstorms winds will be very high with gusts regularly over 40-50 mph. For our area, tornadoes do not appear likely.
