Fort Anderson comes to life

WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — This weekend the sights, sounds, and smells of life at Fort Anderson brought many back to the time of the Civil War.

“History is something that is not being focused on as much in schools anymore, so what we have a chance to do with this program is bring history alive, ” historic interpreter, Jim McKee said.

And history did come alive when volunteers came from all over to dress for the time and remind residents in our area a little of its past. Brunswick Town was the first permanent settlement in the Cape Fear region. Reenactors were performing artillery and infantry demonstrations, but it means more than just fun and games to some.

One reenactor, Will Jarman said, ” I have always been enamored with history especially with what went on in my own backyard, U.S. History has always been my thing, especially in the state of North Carolina because it goes back so far.”

Cannons and rifles were going off as part of the usua; demonstrations but this year there was a new addition. The unseen enemies was the focus showing the medical maladies and underwater obstructions in the Cape Fear River. People were gathering to see the new demonstrations being performed.

“You have to look backwards to know where you are going and it is telling a story,” Don Hummel said.
