Leland businesses worried about possible sign restrictions

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Business owners in Leland are worried potential restrictions on signs in town could cost them money.

Thursday town council will discuss limiting signs to a maximum height of six to eight feet depending on the business’s zoning area.

Town planners want to change the look of Leland, but small business owners worry it will affect their bottom line. The town would give businesses five years to comply with any changes to its sign ordinance. One business owner says he cannot afford it during hard economic times.

“It’s going to affect all of us,” said Skip Witofsky, who owns Skip’s Tires on Village Road. “It will affect me, because my sign will be six foot two, and people riding by with bushes up front, I mean they aren’t going to see our sign.”

Last week Wittkofsky went from business to business getting owners to sign a petition against the new ordinance. He says this is going to slow down business for the entire town.

“It’s going to affect us out here, because if you don’t have the people coming through town and in town, it affects us,” he said.

But not everyone agrees. Town Manager David Hollis says limiting the height of signs would benefit everyone. Hollis says signs are always an issue that most people do not agree on.

“Businesses want signs that you can see from space, and planners and folks like that want signs that are more aesthetically pleasing,” he said.

Wittofsky has had more than 80 local business owners sign the petition against the ordinance.

Town leaders are expecting a good turn out at Thursday’s public hearing. Their meeting starts at 7 p.m.
