Union County engineer named to NC utilities panel

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Gov. Pat McCrory has made his first appointment to the North Carolina Utilities Commission, choosing an energy engineer at a metal manufacturing company to help regulate the state’s electric, natural gas and telecommunications markets.

McCrory announced Wednesday that Don Bailey of Union County would serve out the last four years of the eight-year term of Lorinzo Joyner, who retired from the commission in January 2012.

Bailey is the primary energy engineer at ATI Allvac, which has plants in Monroe. He’s also worked as a design engineer for cities and has been on a North Caroilna utility customer association board since 2002.

The General Assembly must confirm the appointment.

Outside groups are watching closely McCrory’s commission picks. McCrory was a longtime Duke Energy Corp. employee.
