Runners invade Downtown Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Crowds of pink packed the streets of Downtown Wilmington Saturday morning for the Inaugural Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The event kicked off with a 5k race and walk starting on 2nd Street near Market, and continuing all through the streets of Downtown. Survivors and supporters alike say it is a challenge worth doing for many reasons, if not just to stay healthy.
“I do not have any personal experience with it myself, but I think it is a great cause,” says Tom Newins, visiting from Alaska. “I think it is great to get people out here to recognize how important it is for the community to see not only the cause, but to be healthy. It is a great habit to get out there and exercise on a regular basis.”
An estimated 6,000 women in North Carolina will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Runners say events like these not only raise money for the cause, but also increase awareness.
