Expansion in Porters Neck could mean new business

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tonight a Myrtle Beach developer proposed a major retail center on Market Street in Porters Neck. Paramount Development is reaching out to Walmart or a similar type tenant to be an anchor.

David Harner the company’s senior real estate manager says it looks like most of the people that showed up tonight support the project but there were some concerns.

The company is looking at about 245 thousand square feet of retail space on a combination of two properties, totaling 44 acres. The project would be at 8107 Market Street.

The development manager David Harner says he feels the project will be successful on this end of town because of the large number of people in the area. “The goods and services that we believe we’ll be able to bring to the project aren’t currently here and right now they have to drive six plus miles into town, through a very congested part of Market Street corridor to get to these goods and services,” Harner says.

Currently the land is vacant. Harner says the project is consistant with the county’s long-term vision for this property. Sam Burgess from the New Hanover County Planning Department says the project is too premature to comment on.

Harner says the shops and restaurants would be beside the anchor retailer, which usually takes up 50 percent of the space. He says they are going back to the drawing board to fix the problems they heard about tonight. “I think there’s natural concern with noise and safety and visibility and what the project would look like,” Harner says.

David Harner says the next project metting will be held next Tuesday. They are turning in the new plan in the beginning of April.
