Jury selection begins in rape trial

CLINTON, NC (WWAY) –- Today was the first day of jury selection for a rape case that happened almost three years ago.

Christopher Goins will be tried for the rape of a female relative, but Goins is no stranger to crime. Because of his criminal background the jurors in this case will come from Sampson County.

In 1996, Goins slit a female defense attorney’s throat outside of the New Hanover County Courthouse. He served eleven years in prison and was released July 16, 2010.

Police say the rape occurred five days later on July 21, 2010 on Shipyard Boulevard in Wilmington. He allegedly did this at knife and gunpoint.

Goins was denied a change of venue but once the jury is selected in Sampson County, jurors will be bused to Wilmington each day for the trial. The Justice System is allowing an out-of-county jury because of Goins’ crime against the Wilmington defense attorney 17 years ago.

The trial will take place at the New Hanover County Courthouse.

The StarNews reports that New Hanover County judges have recused themselves from the case, so an out-of-county judge will preside over the trial.
