Teacher files grievances against principal
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — One New Hanover County teacher feels like she is being bullied by the principal. A forty-two page document including grievances and emails between the principal and teacher explains it all.
Beth Brown is a teacher who says she only wants the best for her students. She says the principal at her New Hanover County School isn’t making that easy. After addressing Principal Todd Finn about an issue with the heat in Brogden Hall, she says he retaliated by making her switch rooms. Finn instructed her to move her room, and all of its things, to another part of the building for what he says was for an unrelated reason. Brown filed a grievance to human resources, but human resources supported the principal.
“The principal has the right to move classrooms even at the midterm break. The move is not a grievable issue unless we are putting you in a situation which would be detrimental to your health,” said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources John Welmers. “Though I fully understand your concerns with the move and the fact that you will be in a crowded situation, I don’t believe your health or safety is in jeopardy.”
Brown says moving during the “dog days of summer” did affect her health. She says it activated hives and caused her to suffer from wheezing.
Brown’s doctor supported her saying,”Beth Brown has been a patient of mine since 2006 who I treat for multiple allergies and asthma. She is highly allergic to dust, both dust types of dust mites and cockroach excrement.”
Principal Finn sent an emailing to Brown expressing his concern.
“Understanding your concern is allergy related, I have instructed our custodial staff to support you 100% in the move,” said Finn. “Mr. Blackmore is making arrangements this morning. I do not wish for your allergies to be affected in any way, therefore you are not to move anything that may cause dust to rise. If need be, our custodial staff will move every object for you. This is not a problem.”
Brown was unavailable for comment about her grievances.
