House begins talking Charlotte airport governance

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A House member says he’ll slow down a bill that would shift control of North Carolina’s largest airport until a study looking at airport governance and paid for by Charlotte is complete.

Rep. Bill Brawley of Matthews made the comments Tuesday as the House Transportation Committee began discussing legislation to create a regional authority to oversee Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

The airport is currently run by the city, but Republican lawmakers pushing the change say a new structure is needed as the airport evolves into a major East Coast freight transportation hub with rail.

A Senate version of the bill already passed that chamber last month. Brawley says he would give Charlotte time to defend its study, expected for completion May 1. The Charlotte City Council opposes the shift.
