Commissioner Brian Berger censured, Amotion filed.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners covered nearly twenty agenda topics Monday afternoon. Two of those topics focused on the future of Commissioner Brian Berger.

“Serving in public office is a right, not a privilege,” said Chairman Woody White.

Members of the board say Berger’s past actions, including his 12 unexcused absences from meetings, make that privilege revocable. The board agreed to censure Commissioner Berger…and voted 3 to 2 in favor of amotion, a process that could potentially remove Berger from the Board of Commissioners permanently.

However, Commissioner Jonathan Barfield says amotion is an unfamiliar process that deserves more deliberation.

“No other county, and there are 100 counties in our state, have ever attempted to do anything like this,” said Barfield.

Woody White is willing to take the risk.

“Well the fact that it has not been done for a really long time, does not mean that it is not the right thing to do,” said White.

Barfield says the process could drag out for months. He says it is a decision that should be up to voters.

“It is too much power put in the hands of 4 or 5 individuals to determine who is right for their board.”
