NC House budget committee endorses voter ID bill

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A North Carolina voter identification bill is headed to the House floor after the last of three committees signed off on the legislation.

The Appropriations Committee voted in favor of the bill Tuesday over the objections of Democrats who again tried to add amendments to ease restrictions requiring voters to present photo identification at the polls. But Republicans on the House’s top budget-writing committee voted each one down.

The one successful change was submitted by a Republican and would add Cherokee tribal ID to the acceptable forms of state-issued ID. Supporters say the Cherokee are federally recognized, unlike other tribes.

Cost of the legislation could reach nearly $4 million. The bill is expected to reach the House floor to begin the final approval in the chamber Wednesday.
