Building History: Hart Cottage
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY ) — Good things come in small packages. This little gem is part of a larger building collection, but it has its own history.
We’re featuring Hart Cottage in this week’s Building History:
Have you seen this little lane and wondered, is there a cottage on cottage lane?
There is and it has quite a history.
“It was built by Levi hart in 1852 and he had a house in front facing third street built at the same time,” Gary Southerland explains. “He used this for his carriage, you can see the front. It had a place for a carriage and a lot for a horse.”
Gary Southerland is facilities manager for First Presbyterian Church, and in addition to the large buildings there is this little place.
“It was bought by Annie Kenan around 1915. The church acquired it from the Kenan family in 1964; they tore the house down and built a parking lot. Since then it has been used by numerous groups, “Southerland said.
The building is small but it is just the right space for a busy church.
“There is never enough room when you are downtown with a church. It’s hard to expand your facilities so you make the best use of what you have,” Southerland pointed out.
The building is original, it’s quaint and is popular with tourists.
“Everybody likes it; we get a lot of walking tourists. They like to stop and look, they ask can we look inside, we open up and let them in. they’re all intrigued by the beams and where the doors were and that is was an actual carriage house.”
The Hart cottage is located at First Presbyterian and is just off 3rd street on Cottage Lane.
