3 Perdue backers plead guilty to misdemeanors

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Three of former North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue’s supporters are paying fines after pleading guilty in a case growing from an investigation of the Democrat’s 2008 campaign finances.

Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby says the misdemeanor guilty pleas Wednesday wrap up a long-running probe into undisclosed Perdue plane flights.

Long-time Perdue friend Trawick “Buzzy” Stubbs Jr. and former state magistrate Robert Caldwell of Morganton accepted plea bargains that reduced their charges from felonies. They were accused of hiding the source of money used to pay for the Perdue flights in 2007 and 2008.

Stubbs was fined $5,000 and Caldwell $500.

Morganton fast-food restaurant owner Charles Michael Fulenwider pleaded guilty after funneling $32,000 to a Chapel Hill financial firm to help pay a Perdue fundraiser’s salary. He was fined $5,000.
