Movie theaters hope for deal to keep ‘Iron Man 3’ on screens
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — “Iron Man 3” made its Hollywood debut last night. But there are serious questions about how many big screens in Wilmington will show the film when it opens next week.
“Iron Man 3” is expected to be one of this year’s biggest movies with many of the scenes filmed right here in Wilmington, but now we’re learning it may have hit a snag for Wilmington audiences.
“I was surprised,” said Thomas Gilbert of Fan Boy Comics, who has been helping organize a viewing party at Regal Mayfaire. “I was disappointed that people might not be able to see the movie and we might not be able to do these events.”
According to the LA Times, Walt Disney Studios and several movie theatre chains across the country, including Regal Entertainment Group, are fighting over how to split revenue from ticket sales for “Iron Man 3.” This would affect theatres like Regal Mayfaire.
“We’re disappointed that it might not happen, but we’re hoping, and we’re still thinking that it’s going too, and we’re going to continue like it will,” Gilbert said.
Shane Gilroy works at Carmike Cinema in Wilmington. Carmike will have 12 theaters dedicated to the “Iron Man 3” premiere and is looking forward to the big day.
“It’s kind of exciting to be able to watch a movie and see scenes from the area that you know, like there’s the hospital or there’s downtown, and to be able to see that kind of thing,” Gilroy said.
Regal Mayfaire is also scheduled to host an invitation-only screening of “Iron Man 3” Sunday night, including state leaders and other dignitaries.
A Regal Entertainment Group spokesman tells WWAY he hopes an agreement between Disney and the theaters can be worked out soon, perhaps as early as tonight.
