Guilty pleas close two 2011 Pender Co. murder cases

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Pender County man will face life behind bars for killing his neighbor.

Michael Grant accepted the district attorney’s plea deal of life in prison without the possibility of parole Monday. He says he’s now a changed man.

It was an emotional day at the Pender County Judicial Annex, but the family of victim Anthony Edens says they finally have closure.

In August 2011, investigators say, Grant shot Edens seven times and killed him. It happened in the Summit Ridge neighborhood in Rocky Point.

According to family, two men were neighbors and had a friendship. The district attorney’s office said Grant was under the influence of bath salts when he fired at Edens.

Grant says he’s found God in this process, which brought Edens’s family relief as they too are people of faith.

Grant will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In a separate hearing, another Pender County man pleaded guilty to killing his stepfather also in 2011, according to the StarNews. James Gorby is set for sentencing Tuesday to life in prison without parole.

Gorby is accused of shooting and killing his stepfather Roger Mock on September 28, 2011, in Hampstead. Gorby was also charged at the time with breaking and entering and larceny, larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of stolen property.
