McIntyre continues talks over federal shift of Brunswick Co. to Myrtle Beach MSA

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The battle continues in Washington over the federal government’s decision to move Brunswick County into the Myrtle Beach metro area.

Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-7th District) says Brunswick County is one of the fastest growing counties not only in the state but in the nation.

McIntyre says clearly the growth in northern Brunswick County is centered on growth and services in Wilmington. He says people in Brunswick County rely more on services in the Port City than they do south of the border.

The congressman says he’s talked with local and federal leaders about how that growth is tied into the Cape Fear region.

“Whether it’s the health services, whether it’s the cultural arts that the college offers, whether it’s the type of retail establishments, clearly that nexus between Brunswick and Wilmington is tremendous, but when you look at Brunswick County as a whole, its growth is not attributable to the growth of Myrtle Beach. It’s attributable to the growth going on here in the Cape Fear region.”

He says there are statistics to show the growth in Brunswick County belongs to southeastern North Carolina.

McIntyre says federal officials looked at two core areas of growth, and when looking at a map, they thought it was from Myrtle Beach, but the congressman says we know it is not.
