McCrory’s transportation model reaches NC House

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A new transportation funding model that Gov. Pat McCrory says will direct scarce resources to higher-impact projects is making its way through the North Carolina House.

The House Transportation Committee took a first look at the bill Tuesday and unanimously voted to send it to committees that deal with funding. The bill establishes three tiers of projects, with statewide and regional initiatives taking 80 percent of funding. Currently, funding is divided evenly among the state’s 14 Department of Transportation divisions.

Some lawmakers expressed concerns that rural counties will bear the brunt of the changes as priorities shift. Transportation Secretary Tony Tata has said the state will redirect $120 million a year from secondary road maintenance to construction projects that better ease congestion and provide economic benefits.
