NC renewable energy repeal may get revived

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Republicans helped sink a bill written by GOP colleagues that would end requirements for North Carolina electric utilities to create power through alternative sources and efficiencies.

Now, the measure’s chief sponsor hopes to revive the bill.

House Majority Whip Mike Hager of Rutherfordton is also chairman of the committee that defeated a motion to move the bill along to another committee. Hager returned the bill to the committee’s agenda for its Wednesday meeting.

Hager said Tuesday he’s asking House members to reconsider their votes and won’t bring it up unless he’s got enough support. Hager says conservatives should support what he calls a conservative bill philosophically.

Several House Republican leaders voted against the bill, which would phase out and later repeal a 2007 law mandating a renewable energy portfolio standard.
