Extraordinary People: Mamie Fowler serves up happiness at Chick-fil-A
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Fried chicken and french fries may fill customers’ stomachs, but the dining room hostess at Chick-fil-A in Monkey Junction fills their souls.
Mamie Fowler, 74, has worked for 33 years in the fast food business, going on eight at Chick-fil-A. With her warm and welcoming demeanor, she makes a point to connect with every person who walks through the door. Many customers even know her by name.
“It doesn’t cost anything for a kind word or a smile,” Fowler said.
Nora Pepper was new to Wilmington seven years ago when she visited Chick-fil-A. Mamie was the first friend she made in town. She says Mamie helped her through a very difficult time.
“My husband was passing away,” Pepper said. He was in Hospice. She came to see him. She didn’t even know him that well, but she came to see him.”
Pepper is just one of many Fowler has touched. She’s a grandmother of 11 and mother of five. Many of her customers call her grandma, some even bring her gifts.
“I try to be of service to them,” Fowler said. “If they need me in any way, I would be there.”
Fowler says she takes the weekends off and plays bingo. But by Monday morning, she’s excited and ready to get back to work.
“I truly love it. It’s my home away from home,” Fowler said.
