NC House bill opens renegotiation on Dix property

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – House lawmakers want to give the state and the city of Raleigh time to renegotiate a lease for the Dorothea Dix property.

The House Judiciary Committee voted Wednesday on a bill that would still scrap a lease reached late in former Gov. Beverly Perdue’s administration but not until April 2014. Bill sponsor Rep. Justin Burr of Albemarle said that leaves time to decide the true value of the land and the terms of a lease or sale.

State budget director Art Pope said Gov. Pat McCrory backs the bill but wants to guarantee space to house the Department of Health and Human Services in return for negotiations on other nearby property.

City Attorney Thomas McCormick said he thinks the original lease is valid but supports the bill.
