Battleship marks Memorial Day with 48th annual service

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — People in the Port City celebrated this Memorial Day in a variety of ways, including the 48th Annual Memorial Day Service on the Battleship North Carolina.

Hundreds of people turned out for today’s service including Armed Forces Veterans, Elected Leaders and the 440th North Carolina Army National Guard Band.

Today’s service was very emotional and people came from all over the state to remember the men and women who gave their lives to fight for our freedom.

For Kay Adolph Memorial Day is more than just a holiday. It’s a day of remembrance and a day to celebrate the men and women who have protected our freedoms.

“It was very emotional. It’s remembering my childhood and what was going on during World War II,” said Adolph.

Adolph was just one of the many voices that came together Monday to celebrate the event aboard The Battleship North Carolina.

Nick Bryan came to the event with his family and said he enjoyed learning about the history of Memorial Day.

“A lot of people in my family were in the military so I just really wanted to learn about the history,” said Bryan.

Nick’s father says it was important to bring his family to the Memorial Day Service because he wants his children to appreciate the freedoms they have today.

Lessons Adolph says all children should learn.

“We are so fortunate to be in this country and I hope they can learn to appreciate it. We have so much here,” said Adolph.

And as for Nick, he has a special message to the men and women we honor this Memorial Day.

“I want to thank you for fighting for our freedom and that I can live here without any trouble. Thanks a lot,” Bryan said.
