Humane Society, NC Chamber differ on bill’s intent

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – An animal protection group is running a television ad opposing a bill they say would make it harder to uncover animal abuse with whistleblower videos at North Carolina companies.

The Humane Society of the United States says it’s spending $50,000 on a commercial in the Raleigh market starting Tuesday. The narrator blames legislators and the North Carolina Chamber for the Senate bill, which has passed one committee.

The Chamber says the Humane Society is misrepresenting the bill’s intent and says it would halt abuse more quickly.

The measure creates the crime of employment fraud if someone willfully uses wrong information to access a business to take videos or documents.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has sent a video to legislators opposing the bill featuring Republican pundit Mary Matalin.
