Sides settle NC lawsuit over $910,000 fish prize

BEAUFORT, N.C. (AP) – One of the country’s richest deep-sea fishing tournaments and the anglers who landed an 880-pound blue marlin are settling their North Carolina lawsuit over the $910,000 prize.

A statement from the lawyer representing the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament says the case was settled, but gives no details.

The deal upholds the disqualification of the charter boat Citation as the 2010 winners. The Virginia-based first mate failed to buy a $15 North Carolina fishing license before landing what would have been a tournament record catch. The Citation’s lawyer didn’t return calls Friday.

The settlement upholds the top prize for the Jacksonville-based Carnivore, which reeled in a 528-pound marlin. Owners of the Carnivore stood to divide $1 million after taking the winner’s share and part of the third-place money.
