Neighbors worry teen’s shooting death may be start of violence

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 17-year-old boy is dead after an early morning shooting. Now police and residents in a Wilmington neighborhood are trying to piece together exactly what went wrong.

One neighbor said he and his wife had both just fallen asleep, but they were quickly woken up by what sounded like a scene from the wild west.

After retiring from his job in with the Department of Corrections Hampton Colclough, 63, moved to what he calls a quiet neighborhood at the corner of 6th and Kidder streets in Wilmington. But his perception of the neighborhood changed around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

“It sounded like cowboys out here. It was just bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. That was it,” Colclough said.

After hearing about 10 shots ring out around his house, Colclough looked out the front door and saw the body of Jeffrey Henry, 17, face down in his front yard between his trash cans.

“I was kind of shocked,” Colclough said. “To have that right there by my door, right there a body laying there like that, I mean, I was shocked. When someone’s life is snuffed out at an early age, it’s just a shame, but this is the kind of world we live in right now.”

Using Dogs and the SABLE helicopters, police found a second man with a gunshot in his leg hiding in a nearby backyard.

Though investigators say there is not yet a connection between the two victims, Colclough says he fears this is not the end of the violence. Other neighbors, who asked not to go on camera for fear of retaliation, shared his thoughts.

“He was a member of the Bloods,” Colclough said. “Now there’s either Bloods or Crips, and there’s not Crips here. It’s all Bloods. You can expect repercussions as a result.”

Investigators have not yet said who the the second shooting victim is, but officers did question him at the hospital.

If you have any information on the shootings call the police.
