Cumberland teenager is 2nd drowning victim in June
HOPE MILLS, N.C. (AP) – Divers have found the body of a 17-year-old Cumberland County teenager who disappeared after going swimming in a local creek.
Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said the body of Cameron Draughon was found early Thursday afternoon about 50 feet from where he disappeared under the surface of Rockfish Creek, which is south of Hope Mills.
Tanna said the creek is swollen because of recent rainfall, which generated a swift current that hindered the search.
The creek is 35 feet at its deepest point.
Draughon is the second teenager to drown in the region this month. Dustin Turner, an 18-year-old high school senior drowned June 4 in the Cape Fear River. Divers recovered Turner’s body on the day he was to graduate from Cape Fear High School.
