NC sheriff says deputy shoots man in confrontation

HENDERSON, N.C (AP) – North Carolina investigators are looking into a shooting involving a Vance County sheriff’s deputy who said he fired because a suspect was trying to run him down with a vehicle.

WRAL reports (http://bit.ly/19wvpxK ) that Vance County Sheriff Peter White said the deputy was responding to a report when the suspect took off ahead of pursuing authorities.

Sgt. Tony Wallace gotten out of his cruiser in a parking lot in Henderson and lost his balance. White says 25-year-old John Mann Jr. tried to run over Wallace with his car, so the deputy shot Mann in the arm and shoulder.

Wallace wasn’t injured. Mann was taken to a Durham hospital and is expected to recover.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
