NC charter oversight board pulled by House panel

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — An effort to create a state panel separate from North Carolina’s State Board of Education to oversee charter schools is apparently over in favor of beefing up a current advisory panel.

The House Education Committee gave bipartisan support Tuesday to a new version of a Senate bill that originally would have created a new Public Charter Schools Board to approve and reject charter applications. But some Republicans and new State Board of Education Chairman Bill Cobey raised constitutional questions.

The new version replaces the current advisory council with an 11-member advisory board that will continue to recommend charter school changes to the state education board.

Senate bill sponsor Jerry Tillman of Randolph County says he thinks Republicans in the Senate will support the changes.
