UPDATE: Train carrying flammable cargo derails, causes evacuations
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A train carrying flammable cargo is derailed in Wilmington’s Love Grove community, blocking people who live there from getting in and out of the neighborhood.
Dispatchers say the train ran off the tracks in the 1200 block of King Street around 5 a.m.
Police have evacuated the row of houses closest to where the train derailed as a precaution, because the cargo is highly flammable.
Investigators say they are working to set up a gravel road near the scene by 9 a.m. to give emergency vehicles access to Love Grove and let residents get out.
Investigators say two of the train’s 64 cars are completely off the tracks. The cargo is contained at this time, but crews are worried if the cars teeter, they may be punctured.
Police say they are waiting on crews out of South Carolina arrive on the scene with a crane to help clean up the crash, and open up the roadway. They say they expect crews by noon.
