CFCC instructor left after being accused of giving student boat motor, falsifying records

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Cape Fear Community College instructor is no longer with the school after a state audit accused him of falsifying records and giving a school-owned boat motor to a student.

According to the report, Yamaha Motor Corporation donated the motor to the school in 2009 with the stipulation that it be used for “technical training purposes only.” It alleges that the instructor claimed he “did not have much use for it,” because it was a lot larger than what his class typically worked on.

The report says the instructor wanted feedback on the motor’s performance, and he said after getting approval from the Marine Technology Department chair, he gave it to a student in April 2011 to try out on the student’s personal boat.

Both the teacher and student told auditors that the student was expected to bring the motor back, but never did. The student said he bought a boat specifically to use with the motor.

The report also says the instructor falsified inventory records by indicating the motor was still on campus.

In a letter last month to the state auditor responding to the audit, CFCC President Dr. Ted Spring said the instructor, whose name is not mentioned in the report, was no longer employed as of May 17. It also says the department chair was counseled about the issue and received a disciplinary letter. The Marine Technology Department’s website says the chair is Jason Rogers.
