Rep. Jones asks for Congressional hearing on Smithfield sale

WASHINGTON, DC (WWAY) — Rep. Walter Jones (R-3rd District) wants a Congressional hearing on the planned sale of Smithfield Foods, Inc., to a Chinese company.

Jones has asked the House Agriculture Committee to hold a hearing on the proposed acquisition of Smithfield by Shuanghui International Holdings Limited.

In a letter to House Agriculture Committee Chair Rep. Frank Lucas, Jones said he had serious concerns on potential impacts on jobs, national security, food safety and supply and intellectual property rights.

Smithfield is the world’s largest pork producer and processor and runs the world’s largest slaughter house in Bladen County.

“This attempt by a Chinese company – which has a history of egregious food safety violations – to take over the world’s largest pork producer is not a situation that Congress can ignore,” Jones said in a statement.

According to Jones’s letter, the Senate Agriculture Committee has already scheduled a hearing on the Smithfield sale for mid-July. Under the Foreign Investment and National Security Act of 2007, the Obama administration will make the final decision as to whether or not the merger is finalized. Jones says if the merger is approved, it will be the largest-ever acquisition of an American corporation by a Chinese company.
